Systemic lupus erythematosus secondary to infection with Epstein-Barr virus

چکیده
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, systemic, idiopathic and autoimmune disease. Infection with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a risk factor associated with the development of SLE. Almost all pediatric patients with SLE have serological evidence of EBV infection. Patients with SLE have increased EBV viral load in serum and saliva. These patients have 15-30 times the amount of viral DNA in peripheral blood. In this case the association between SLE and EBV infection is shown as well as the possibility of viral involvement as a trigger for the development of an aggressive form of LES. * Department of Infectology, Hospital General de México, Mexico City, Mexico. ‡ Department of Microbiology and Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. § Department of Infectology, Instituto para el Desarrollo Integral de la Salud (IDISA), Mexico City, Mexico.

Multiple granulomatous lung lesions in a patient with Epstein-Barr-virus-induced mononucleosis and new-onset systemic lupus erythematosus: a case report
INTRODUCTION Granulomatous lesions are commonly encountered abnormalities in pulmonary pathology, and often pose a diagnostic challenge. We report an unusual case of granulomatous lung disease with uncommon characteristics, which developed following Epstein-Barr-virus-induced mononucleosis and new-onset systemic lupus erythematosus. We aim to highlight a diagnostic approach for the condition an...
متن کاملAn increased prevalence of Epstein-Barr virus infection in young patients suggests a possible etiology for systemic lupus erythematosus.
An unknown environmental agent has been suspected to induce systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus) in man. Prompted by our recent immunochemical findings, we sought evidence for an association between Epstein-Barr virus infection and lupus. Because the vast majority of adults have been infected with Epstein-Barr virus, we chose to study children and young adults. Virtually all (116 of 117, or 99%...
متن کاملEpstein-Barr virus infection induces lupus autoimmunity.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus) is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by a constellation of varied clinical presentations, although the nearly universal presence of autoantibodies is a salient unifying feature. Ongoing research efforts focus on understanding the complex combination of genetic and environmental factors that lead to SLE in select individuals. Our previous wor...
متن کاملEpstein-Barr virus and molecular mimicry in systemic lupus erythematosus.
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus) is a complex disease with a multifactoral etiology, with genetic, hormonal, and environmental influences. Molecular mimicry as a result of viral infection may contribute to the development of lupus. The pattern of autoantibody development in lupus is consistent with initiation through molecular mimicry, as the initial autoantigenic epitopes that have ...
متن کاملEpstein-Barr Virus in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Multiple Sclerosis—Association and Causation
Epidemiological data suggest that the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is associated with several autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. However, it is not clear whether EBV plays a role in the pathogenesis of these diseases, and if so, by which mechanisms the virus may contribute. In this review, we discuss possible viral and immunologic...
